چکیده

Previous work has shown the perhaps surprising result that, for any binary phylogenetic tree T , there is a set of four characters that define T . Here we deal with the general case, where T is an arbitrary X-tree. We show that if d is the maximum degree of any vertex in T , then the minimum number of characters that identify T is log2 d (up to a small multiplicative constant).

Character trees from transcriptome data: Origin and individuation of morphological characters and the so-called "species signal".

We elaborate a framework for investigating the evolutionary history of morphological characters. We argue that morphological character trees generated by phylogenetic analysis of transcriptomes provide a useful tool for identifying causal gene expression differences underlying the development and evolution of morphological characters. They also enable rigorous testing of different models of mor...

Stochastic mapping of morphological characters.

Many questions in evolutionary biology are best addressed by comparing traits in different species. Often such studies involve mapping characters on phylogenetic trees. Mapping characters on trees allows the nature, number, and timing of the transformations to be identified. The parsimony method is the only method available for mapping morphological characters on phylogenies. Although the parsi...

Tree Reconstruction from Multi-State Characters

In evolutionary biology, a character is a function χ from a set X of present-day species into a finite set of states. Suppose the species in X have evolved according to a bifurcating tree T . Biologists would like to use characters to infer this tree. Assume that χ is the result of an evolutionary process on T that has not involved reverse or parallel transitions, such characters are called hom...

The effect of vehicular air pollution on leaf anatomical characters of some fruit-bearing trees (cause study: traditional Qazvin gardens)

Background and Objective: Air pollution, especially the portion related to Motor vehicles, is a serious problem in many heavily polluted areas in the world. This investigation was conducted to study the effects of the air pollution on the anatomical structure of leaf in some valuable fruit-bearing trees in Traditional Qazvin gardens. Materials and Methods: In this study, 72 leaf samples were r...

Modelling fuzzy universal resource identifiers: A first approach

A Universal Resource Identifier (or URI) is a compact string of characters for identifying an abstract or physical resource, providing a simple and extensible means for identifying that resource [3]. In this paper we briefly present a new modelling approach of extending this indicator to encompass paths of a type of directed labelled fuzzy trees, with focus given to its application to the World...
